Remediation of salt-contaminated soils using native plants – Bozeman

Remediation of De-icer Salt Contaminated Soil Using Native Montana Plants – by Thomas Raske
Tuesday, November 17 at 7 pm
Thomas Raske, a plant sciences master’s student at MSU, will present his research. Montana stores and uses up to 1,000,000 pounds of deicing salt blends statewide each year for winter maintenance. Even when stored properly, these deicing salts can leach into soil and groundwater. Salt tolerant (halophytic) plants can remove and store salt from contaminated soils, but the remediation abilities of native Montana halophytes remain understudied. This study aims to compile the salt-tolerance mechanisms of native halophytes through greenhouse and field trials and assess the feasibility of using them for remediation in areas surrounding salt storage facilities and in near-road environments.
Meet in Room 108 of the Plant Bioscience Building on the campus of MSU (park in the lot immediately to the north). This presentation will not be recorded. See Campus map at https://www.montana.edu/campusmap/#!/
