SUMMARY:Grass ID workshop - West Glacier
DESCRIPTION:Grass ID & appreciation workshop – West Glacier\n\nTuesday\, July 21 – 1:30 pm to 3 pm\nGrasses comprise the largest\, most wide-spread and economically important plant family worldwide. Mark Majerus spent his career working with grasses.  He authored the book\, Forage and Reclamation Grasses of the Northern Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. \nThe workshop will discuss the morphological characteristics used to distinguish between grass genera and species. Mark will use samples from 60-to-70 different species\, and point out the characteristics unique to individual species.  We’ll also discuss the importance of each species for disturbed land restoration\, as forage for both wildlife & livestock\, and wildlife habitat. \nSign up with Grace Hoelscher at: Forms.office.com/g/p3hURnrRsJ. Come and help!  Pull invasive weeds\,  install an educational kiosk\, and install boot brush station to help clean weed-seeds off boots before people step into the area. Afterwards\, hike along State Line Trail #738 while admiring the plants in the forest understory. \nBring bug spray\, water\, a lunch\, and a pair of gardening gloves.  It’s a half-hour drive from Superior. DESCRIPTION:Northwest Peak Scenic Area (Yaak) \nSaturday\, August 8 – 8:30 am to ~4:30 pm\nHike to Northwest Peak in Lincoln County to visit whitebark pine and subalpine larch habitats. Chris Reichert and Betty Kuropat\, retired Forest Service silviculturists\, will lead this moderate 3-to-4-mile round-trip hike. This will be a good time to visit the beautiful Northwest Peak Scenic area\, find blooming wildflowers in the subalpine zone\, and discuss efforts to conserve whitebark pine. \nThe drive to the trailhead is about 60 miles (2 hours) from Troy.  To carpool from Troy\, meet at 8:30 am at the Troy Museum parking area.  Or\, meet at 9:30 am in the parking area at the junction of Pete Creek Road 338 & Yaak Highway 508. \nWear sturdy hiking shoes\, bring rain gear\, a lunch and plenty of water. DESCRIPTION:Prairie Peace Garden self-guided tour – SE of Townsend\nSaturday\, August 8 – 11 am to 4 pm\nCome see Bryan Flynn’s Private Stock Peonies (aka Prairie Peace Garden)\, a few miles southeast of Townsend. Bryan has created an ever-expanding number of native grass and forb strips in various stages of development\, as well as a 750-square-foot xeriscape rock garden. See a broad variety of native plants at different stages of seasonal development. \nBryan will be on hand to chat with visitors\, and handouts describing native gardening will be available. Picnickers are welcome — there are a number of comfortable garden benches with backs and tables on the premises. He’ll have plants for sale\, as available.
