SUMMARY:MNPS Presents... "Talking Turtles and Singing Ice"
DESCRIPTION:Talking Turtles and Singing Ice\nListening to the More-than-Human World in an Age of Distraction\nwith Amy Martin\nListening has always been central to human survival. We’ve evolved to tune in to each other\, and to the sounds of our places\, the voices of other animals\, rhythms of seasons and weather. But today\, amid the digital distractions of our time\, many of us move through our days hearing nothing but human-made sounds: pinging phones\, shouting televisions\, the nonstop noises of our machines. Audio journalist and former Ted Scripps Fellow Amy Martin has spent the last ten years pushing back against this sonic isolation\, turning the microphone toward our planet-mates — and the planet itself — on her Peabody Award-winning podcast\, Threshold. In this talk\, she’ll share some of her adventures from the field and make the case that listening to the more-than-human world is more essential to our survival than ever.\n\nFind Zoom registration information and more information about our monthly “MNPS Presents” online series HERE

SUMMARY:Remediation of salt-contaminated soils using native plants - Bozeman
DESCRIPTION:Remediation of De-icer Salt Contaminated Soil Using Native Montana Plants – by Thomas Raske\nTuesday\, November 17 at 7 pm\nThomas Raske\, a plant sciences master’s student at MSU\, will present his research. Montana stores and uses up to 1\,000\,000 pounds of deicing salt blends statewide each year for winter maintenance. Even when stored properly\, these deicing salts can leach into soil and groundwater. Salt tolerant (halophytic) plants can remove and store salt from contaminated soils\, but the remediation abilities of native Montana halophytes remain understudied. This study aims to compile the salt-tolerance mechanisms of native halophytes through greenhouse and field trials and assess the feasibility of using them for remediation in areas surrounding salt storage facilities and in near-road environments. \nMeet in Room 108 of the Plant Bioscience Building on the campus of MSU (park in the lot immediately to the north). This presentation will not be recorded. See Campus map at  https://www.montana.edu/campusmap/#!/

SUMMARY:Secrets of VERY Dead Plants - Missoula
DESCRIPTION:Secrets of VERY Dead Plants\nThursday November 19 at 7 pm \nMontana has a rich fossil record of plants.   Since the 1970s\, a site known as the Beaver Creek Locality near Lincoln has produced a diverse assemblage of foliage\, flowers and fruits.  These fossils represent a snapshot of life that lived almost 40 million years ago. \nJoin Kallie Moore\, collections manager at the UM Paleontology Center\, as she talks about the Secrets of VERY Dead Plants. \nLocated at the Rocky Mountain Exploration Center\, 1075 South Ave West in Missoula
