DESCRIPTION:Yeager Flats – Choteau\n\nWednesday\, July 8 – 8 am to 3 pm\n\nDave Shea and Rachel Potter will lead participants through a limber pine savannah\, cottonwood groves\, sagebrush and an old burn\, before ending in a vast\, high-elevation native fescue prairie near the base of Ear Mountain on the Rocky Mountain Front. We should see bitterroot\, and if our stars are aligned\, they’ll be in bloom\, as well as plenty of other wildflowers. \nIt’s a 5-mile round-trip with 1\,000 feet of elevation gain. Park biologist Dawn LaFleur will train participants how to identify the targeted weed species and effective hand-pulling techniques. The morning will focus on learning about invasive plant ecology\, issues and identification. We’ll head into the field during the afternoon. \nBring muscles\, water and gloves. Hiking the Hornet Lookout trail will be the highlight of the day. \nWear sturdy shoes\, bring a sack lunch and plenty of water. You’re welcome to come on both days. \nBryan will be on hand to chat with visitors\, and handouts describing native gardening will be available. Picnickers are welcome — there are a number of comfortable garden benches with backs and tables on the premises. He’ll have plants for sale\, as available. Afterwards\, hike along State Line Trail #738 while admiring the plants in the forest understory. \nBring bug spray\, water\, a lunch\, and a pair of gardening gloves.  It’s a half-hour drive from Superior. DESCRIPTION:Northwest Peak Scenic Area (Yaak) \nSaturday\, August 8 – 8:30 am to ~4:30 pm\nHike to Northwest Peak in Lincoln County to visit whitebark pine and subalpine larch habitats. Chris Reichert and Betty Kuropat\, retired Forest Service silviculturists\, will lead this moderate 3-to-4-mile round-trip hike. This will be a good time to visit the beautiful Northwest Peak Scenic area\, find blooming wildflowers in the subalpine zone\, and discuss efforts to conserve whitebark pine. \nThe drive to the trailhead is about 60 miles (2 hours) from Troy.  To carpool from Troy\, meet at 8:30 am at the Troy Museum parking area.  Or\, meet at 9:30 am in the parking area at the junction of Pete Creek Road 338 & Yaak Highway 508. \nWear sturdy hiking shoes\, bring rain gear\, a lunch and plenty of water.
